Information if you want to transfer or exchange your home
What is a transfer?
A transfer is when a tenant requests to be moved to another social rented property, owned by the AHA. It is not a house swap as the tenant will be asking to move into an empty property.
What is an exchange?
An exchange is when a tenant would like to swap properties with another AHA tenant providing they meet all the conditions outlined in the Allocations and Eligibility Policy.
Other tenants can ask at the AHA about any available exchange properties and, if they are interested, they can get in touch with the tenant to discuss making an exchange.
What do I need to do if I want to exchange my home?
You need to:
complete an exchange form which can be obtained from AHA
ask AHA to see if there are any suitable properties for you
both tenants to put a letter in writing to the AHA to say which property they are interested in
await written approval from AHA to say the swap can go ahead
realise that you are accepting the property in its existing condition at the time of the approved exchange.
pay in advance an exchange fee of £250 to cover utility safety checks
What do AHA take into consideration?
We will consider transferring or exchanging you if:
you continue to be eligible for social housing
the property you want meets your need and vice versa
you haven’t breached your tenancy agreement during the previous twelve months
your current property passes an inspection. The inspection will tell us if you have looked after the property and if any significant work is needed.
You will be removed from the transfer list if you don't pay your rent on time or if you do anything that breaks your tenancy agreement.
We are unable to tell you when you will be offered a property. Your position on the waiting list will depend on your current situation and date of application.
If you have further questions about transferring or exchanging properties please get in touch via the enquiry form on the Contact Us page.
