How do I apply for social housing?
You must complete a social housing application and eligibility form for social rented housing. Copies of this can be picked up from the GHA office or Edward T Wheadon House, Le Truchot. If you need help in completing the application form, contact States Housing or the GHA.
If you or anyone you are applying for has medical or special needs that may affect the type of property you require, you will need to complete a Health Needs Assessment Questionnaire with the application. We may need further information from a clinical professional which you will sign to give your consent for.
If you wish to keep a pet or pets, you will need to complete the section in the social housing application and eligibility form. You will also need to complete a pet permission form when offered a property. You must meet the requirements in the Pet Policy for States Housing or the GHA. You cannot keep a pet until permission is granted. You will receive a letter within 10 working days of receipt of the permission form.
If anyone else wishes to be accommodated as a joint tenant in the same property as you, they must qualify for social housing in their own right. They will need to complete a separate social housing application and eligibility form and agree to a joint tenancy whereby they will become jointly and severally liable for the tenancy.
What happens after I send in my social housing application and eligibility form?
States Housing will process your form. You will receive a letter to advise you of the outcome of your application within 28 days of sending in it in, unless additional supporting information has been requested.
The decision letter will tell you which type of accommodation you are eligible for and the “band” within the waiting list in which you sit. For more information see appendix 1 in the Social Housing Allocations and Eligibility Policy.
The date States Housing receives your application will be noted and, should the application be successful, the date of receipt will be your commencement date onto the waiting list.
The Allocations team needs to keep your details up to date in case a property becomes available that meets your criteria. This means that if your circumstances change, such as a pay rise, drop in earnings, a new partner or change of address, you need to advise States Housing immediately as this may affect your application. Regular updates will also be requested including payslips, bank and savings statements.
If your application is rejected, the letter will tell you the reason and will detail whether a reapplication would be considered and if so, when and under what circumstances.
Every decision letter will set out the applicant’s rights to an internal review and/or an appeal.
Your position on the waiting list will be the date we received your application form and all the requested information. The application is also “banded” depending on your circumstances (see Allocations and Eligibility Policy)
